Choosing a manifesto was tough. I’d find one I liked, then realize the person behind it was someone I couldn’t support. Gloria reminded me that manifestos are just glorified rants—you don’t have to accept them wholesale to work with them.
Then my research focused on Grimes. How does a self-proclaimed “anti-imperialist” fall in with the world’s richest man? This project is driven by that question. It’s about using typography to visualize the contradictions between what she says and what she does.
Logo design and font development unfolded in tandem. 5ever draws from early 2010s internet aesthetics, while experiments with my logotype—displacing dots on the matrix—introduced fragmentation and instability into my visual language.
My poster series grew out of these design foundations, using partial word dissolution inspired by blackout poetry to emphasize the fractured nature of Grimes’ persona.
Pixelated blackletter, medieval iconography and cyber sigilsm combine the digital and the archaic—and feel distinctly Grimes-inspired. Beyond aesthetics, they symbolize the persistence of power and control across old and new realms.
The type specimen presents 5ever, reinforcing rant’s visual and conceptual themes, and inviting viewers to explore the layered narrative woven throughout.
